Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself by means of artwork. Even though DuVernay grew up in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in the college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the waste from one of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
