Perry's first attempts to make it within the mainstream world of music failed. Perry was signed to two labels before being later dropped by them before there was a release date for any of her recordings. Capitol Records did release Perry's Ur So Gay, which garnered modest attention in 2007 for its cheerfully joking title. Perry became a bigger star a few months later, with the single I kissed a Girl an assertive ode to sexual curiosity backed by a rough electro-pop beat. It quickly sparked debate as some critics accused its promotion of same-sex relationships as well as others argued that the explicit scenario it depicted catered to the fantasies of males about female sexuality. I Kissed a Girl was an immediate hit for Perry's One of the Boys in 2008, thanks to the combination of titillation combined with polished music. Its bouncy, sharp-tongued and bouncy second single Hot N Cold also proving popular the album much of the songs Perry wrote herself eventually registered greater than 3 million copies across the United States.
